IVF - In Vitro Fertilisation

There has been a huge amount of publicity around IVF and the great improvement in overall pregnancy rates as a result of combining this with Acupuncture.
The British Medical Journal (BMJ) recently published a systematic review and meta-analysis of research which shows that acupuncture increases IVF success rates. For example one of the most well known pieces of research showed the pregnancy rate for a group of women undergoing IVF to be higher than for the control group not receiving acupuncture (42.5% versus 26.3%). This impressive result, using a simple acupuncture protocol shows the fantastic potential that acupuncture offers alongside assisted conception techniques.


I offer all my fertility patients undergoing IVF this protocol of treatment as part of their package of care with me. I find that a few weeks of preparation using either acupuncture alone, or combined with herbs before starting IVF can greatly help women go through the process more successfully.

IVF on its own – Success rates by age (as published June 2008)

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) success rates decline with age and most clinics will not treat patients over 45 years of age. The following statistics detail the chances of IVF succeeding as supplied by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.

• 29.6% for women under 35
• 23.6% for women aged 35-37
• 18.2% for women aged 38-39
• 10.0% for women aged 40-42
• 3.2% for women aged 43-44
• 0.8% for women aged over 44


Acupuncture at Embryo Transfer

If you have not yet received any acupuncture and you are undergoing IVF now and simply wish to use acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer, I offer this service whenever it is possible. As I work from my home-based clinic, I am usually able to be flexible and can see patients seven days a week if required.
